According to a recent study on the Digital Universe, it is estimated that within a span of 8 years, the amount of digital data would have exceeded 40 Zettabytes.
40 Zettabytes is the equivalent of 40 Trillion Gigabytes. In simple terms there would be more than 5200 Giga Bytes of data for every human on earth by 2020. The digital data thus accumulated is mainly due to data generated by inter machine communication over local or wide spread networks. The rise of intelligent or the so called Smart machines would contribute greatly towards this trend. Huge experiments conducted by labs across the globe, like the CERN Large Haldron Collider experiment, would add significantly towards this escalating data crisis.
