Affordable colocation: what’s your cost of power?

Do you know your enterprise data center’s monthly cost of electrical power?

I asked this question to a client yesterday.  I ask it almost every day.  And most people don’t know their power cost model.

Bottom line:  power is a major cost in the data center.  It needs to be assigned to IT so the total cost of technology can be properly assessed.

When considering an outsource data center as an alternative , compare the cost of power in the local enterprise data center to the cost of power in the colocation facility.  The reduction power costs alone may be enough to cover any telecom costs associated with connecting the home office to the data center facility.
